The Council was announced quite recently by Focus Home Interactive and its first episode is about to be released. Since we've had the time to complete it several times, we can share our thoughts about it with you inside. As usual, the full review is only available in French, but if you have some questions regarding the game, join us tonight for a short livestream at 9:00 CET.
After years of Telltale titles and lookalikes, playing The Council comes as a nice relief. We obviously cannot promise you that the story will be interesting until the end, but its premises are pretty engaging to say the least. What makes the game appealing is the fact that choices do seem to matter in the short and in the long term, as you clearly won't be able to witness all the scenes in a single playthrough. It is also quite surprising to have several different scenarios to end the episode, all of them depending on a choice you'll make at some point. Then there are the consequences we have not been able to see yet, but we're quite sure they will influence the story as we've been told they would. The RPG elements and all the things that allow to make the main character a bit more yours show that they can be used to add more interactions and gameplay mechanics in the genre. As a result, we can't wait to see what comes next in The Council.
On the plus side
+ The added mechanics help freshen up the genre
+ Intriguing atmosphere and characters
+ The promise of choices with a real impact on story
+ Several possible cliffhangers at the end of the episode
+ The mix between graphics adventure and RPG
+ It makes us want to see more...
+ … to the point multiple walkthroughs become interesting
+ Great art style
On the downside
- A bit dated technically
- It is too soon to tell if the main plot is going to deliver...
- … and if the choices will affect it as much as claimed
- Being able to fool the game by returning to the main menu when a dialog isn't going well
@KORNdog: My views are gross? Go fuck yourself. I'm done with you. (3 Hours ago)
Asia Argento? Hmm, aye, I'd have a bit of her 'abuse'. (5 Hours ago)
@aphex187: I am plenty familiar with Anthony Bourdain's work. I think those are pretty profound conclusions to draw from the public record. (6 Hours ago)
@GriftGFX: how is it weird? So you're telling me that after somebody who you've followed you don't have certain thoughts on that person? Have you followed both parties stories? Probably not. (6 Hours ago)
@aphex187: What a weird thing to say. Like you know either of them. (8 Hours ago)
portable version. But if the port is based on the Superior Sega Saturn version (i highly doubt) i'll snatch it in a heart beat. (8 Hours ago)
