EXPERIENCE TERROR LIKE NEVER BEFORE IN THE DARK PICTURES - MAN OF MEDAN

New Survival-Horror Anthology Title from Developer Supermassive Games Offers a Chilling Non-Linear, Branching Narrative

SANTA CLARA, Calif., (August 21, 2018) - Leading interactive entertainment developer and publisher BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment America Inc. today announces The Dark Pictures - Man of Medan, the first installment in a brand-new, narrative-horror anthology series. The Dark Pictures - Man of Medan is slated to release in 2019 for the PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system, Xbox One and STEAM® for PC.

Developed by Supermassive Games, the critically-acclaimed studio behind the cult-classic thriller Until Dawn, The Dark Pictures is a series of standalone cinematic horror games linked by one common element: that every playable character can live and every playable character can die throughout the story, yielding numerous possible endings and near-limitless replayability. The series, which is the first in Supermassive’s horror catalog to be released on Xbox One and PC, challenges players to face their fears and uncover the secrets of The Dark Pictures universe, where every choice has potentially irreversible consequences.

“We are incredibly excited to announce the Dark Pictures Anthology and the first game in the series – Man of Medan,” said Pete Samuels, CEO for Supermassive Games and Executive Producer for The Dark Pictures. “With each title being a standalone game, we have the opportunity to create a unique horror experience every time, with new stories, settings, characters and cast. As a studio we have a passion to deliver powerful cinematic horror, and we can’t wait for players to experience these new games across PS4, XBOX and PC. We have a great partner in BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment and we look forward to working with them to help bring these terrifying tales to gamers everywhere.”

The Dark Pictures - Man of Medan chronicles the adventures of a group of friends in search of a mysterious World War II shipwreck, whose holiday diving trip turns sinister as a storm slowly envelops them. With survival their only concern, the player must take control of the five protagonists and traverse the terrors of the sea, both to uncover its mysteries, and to live to tell their tale.

“Horror anthologies have become incredibly popular in recent years, but this format has mostly been limited to the medium of TV — until now,” said Eric Hartness, Vice President of Marketing for BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment America Inc. “With The Dark Pictures, we’re bringing this compelling method of storytelling into the world of video games, and letting gamers take control of their terror with an unprecedented level of interactivity. Man of Medan is our maiden voyage into the genre, and it’s a journey that players definitely won’t want to miss.”

The Dark Pictures - Man of Medan will be available in 2019 for the PlayStation®4 system, Xbox One, and STEAM for PC. The Dark Pictures - Man of Medan is currently pending a final rating with the ESRB. Are they still using the Decima engine since the game is multiplatform now?

Doesn’t look quite as nice as until dawn, plus I imagine that’s an impossibility anyway considering who owns the engine, so i’d say no.

supermassive games apparently has abandoned the decima engine a long time ago, since the prequel game The Impatient that came out after until dawn already used unreal engine 4 instead of decima even tho it was a still a playstation exclusive.

they're dealing with higher quality assets. that's not the case though with this title, the atmosphere seems good but the art design is a bit generic i'd say.

Facial animations and skin shaders look worse, lighting too. Both seem to be utilising similar assets regarding character meshes though. Eh, until dawn looks nicer. I’m in for this though...but only once it’s all out and complete. The inpatient and that game you controlled with your phone were pretty shit, so i’m a bit weary. Hoping it’s as good as until dawn story wise at least.

Yeah these facial graphics are noticeable worse than Until Dawn. However, they still have time to polish up these graphics.

Supermassive Games used out sourced facial tech from 3lateral and cubicmotion. (including skin shader pip-line)
https://www.cubicmotion.com/animation
https://www.cubicmotion.com/until-dawn

same as Ryse, the order, hell blade, tomb raider, Squadron 42, Horizon, and spider man. Demicia engine is not the result of the facial tech or skin shaders, the engine is just optimized for the ps4 platform.

cubicmotion supports cryengine, UE4, Demicia, Frostbite, and Unity.

As for The Dark Pictures, it's using the same out sourced facial tech.

That must be why until dawn looks nicer then I guess. Pretty weird how the same third party facial capture solution resulted in such wildly different results. I mean, tomb raider looked pretty ass next to hellblade for instance. And spiderman looks a lot better than the facial capture in horizon. You'd think they'd be pretty much the same.

yeeeah...that's not really proving your point. lol. the ones from this game just look weird as hell. especially the smallville or xmen guy (they're twins, i never know which is which) but as you, yourself say, it was an engine optimized for the PS4, i guess that focus allowed them to squeeze more out of it.

At least shadows look lot better than until dawn. Framerate and shadows were the biggest weaknesses of that game graphically.

Im very interested to see how much variations these games are gonna have after playing Detroit. It should be more because they are supposed to be short. Also i hope they stepped up their action sequences which in until dawn they were pretty bad tbh. They need to do more complex qtes

Ah man. I was hoping y'all were overreacting about the quality of the graphics. But yeah. It's IMMEDIATELY apparent that we're simply dealing with a lesser engine here. It looks like they're TRYING to get a similar look out of whatever they're using here. But either the tech itself or the amount of resources they're able to commit simply aren't on par with what was done in Until Dawn. As AndreasZ94 said, though, at least it'll have a better frame rate.
