that grapple hook had me psyched in the gameplay video. i was not expecting to see something like that. It's not going to get any better than this. you get both versions of Sonic plus options. I would be a really happy kid if i had this to play many years ago.

Maybe so. I really would like to see Sega grab Story inspiration from the comics. like from these special series -

Knuckles mini series

Issue 39 and Mecha Madness

End Game

There's great story writing in the issues. quite possibly better writing then any sonic game to date. any sonic game with these stories is worth a purchase in my book.

I swear though about the comics, quite a few of the mini series hit near "final fantasy" level in writing. Knuckles tracking his linage is alone worth making into a series. it goes back to the creation of the floating island and ties-in beautifully with the game Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles.

Sega has access to all of this useful material, just saying. If i ever had the trademark of sonic, the comics would be my first source.

I wish they would stop treating Sanic like anything other than a stupid mascot. You know why Mario is timeless and not a bunch of stupid crap? Because they understand that gameplay is #1 and then the story cna be a bit silly and fun. Sonic does it backwards. They make shit games, that only hard core fans ever defend, then they write the most retarded animoo stories that makes anyone that isn't already drawing fetish vore fan art on tumbler cringe the fuck out.

RIP Sonic, you were awsome 1991-1996, before sega made you "edgy".

Sonic is a case of caving to criticism and not sticking to their guns. It's so all over the place and they don't know what to do.

Adventure 1 & 2 were brilliant games. They should have fixed what they had instead of trying to please the 2D fans. Now they're lost.

Sonic was literally always edgy. That was entire marketing gimmick and reason for existing. The franchise has always had "retarded animoo stories." What are you even talking about? Unless you think Sonic stopped existing after Sonic & Knuckles this is exactly how the franchise has been for the vast majority of the history.

After Sonic and Knuckles is when it started sucking. Yes, that is correct. Did you miss that last bit of my post? :P

Yeah, so then we got Sonic 06. Was almost as good as Adventure. Almost.

The problem with Sonic is that the newer 2D games don't capture the open ended level design of the first 3, and the 3D ones don't know how to bring the speed that is associated with Sonic in to 3d and it just becomes janky garbage. Personally i don't understand how ANYONE can say that Sonic Adventure is a brilliant game. Everything except for the Sonic stages suck ass, and the Sonic stages are only ok and have a bazillion bugs and flaws still.

The old games were simple. That's what saves them. Virtually no story, simple mechanics but complex level design. It all works.

Adventure 1 & 2 aren't good games. Certainly not great games. Definitely not brilliant.

Sonic Generations is better than both. But the real kicker: Sonic was never good. Even the Genesis games B-tier platformers.

Best Sonic game? Freedom Planet.

I disagree there. Sonic 1 and 2 i have a lot of nostalgia for so clear bias is there, but 3 i didn't play until a lot later and i still found it good. Not perfect in any sense, but a good platformer none the less.

I agree and disagree, Sega hit it off the ballpark with Sonic generations. there's nothing that Sega forgot about when making that game. the traditional sonic and adventure sonic are emulated very well with their gameplay.

Disagree. You're probably a Mario fan, same with Megido. but anyways, The sonic games were made to be straight forward. originally Sonic was intended to be a "time attack" version of Mario (since Yuji naka liked beating his records) mentioned here
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yk3gFN15hx4

which is also why all of the future sonic games also feature the same speed run stages. this is also why i say there's nothing that sega forgot about when making sonic generation. it's still the same core gameplay.

I love Sega. So I doubt that's it.

I'm more of a Mario fan because they're better games. They're also better time attack games. 2D Mario games lend themselves to speed running just as readily as any Sonic the Hedgehog game. More so because of superior controls and level design.

I was a big Sega fan when I was a kid. I was all about Sonic when I was young, but I've played many more games now and I realize that they don't really hold up against the competition. Even in that day. Even in the 8-bit era. I guess "never good" may be too harsh, but I don't think they were ever very good.

@ above
Me in particular, i've owned 3 nintendo platforms. but i made a clear distinction between Mario and Sonic. Mario games were always harder, yes. (if you like that better then sure i guess.) but very few times i ever wanted one to be like the other.

And I thought Astal (based on Knuckles) and Knights into dreams (a fusion of Knuckles + Sonic) covered some of the things people would like to see in a Sonic game period. which these titles were superb and were better off not being part of the Sonic franchise.

with sonic in particular the themes will always be the same. Sonic went hub-world in both Sonic 06 and in aspects of Unleashed, which were criticized for being too slow for gameplay. Sonic went full 3D plat-former in Sonic boom and was criticized for being too slow for gameplay. Sonic went RPG in "Sonic Chronicles" and was criticized for being Waaaay too slow for gameplay.

So in the end it all comes back to the fusion that was started in Sonic generations. a blend of the best from both worlds and they were great for speed running.

You should totally check out Freedom Planet too. It's an homage to Sonic but I think it plays better.

And yeah I think they're headed in as right of a direction as they can. Apart from the custom character feature ;)

I checked it out and bookmarked it. i also have seen this title before, sometime last year. seems like a great fan made title, and story wise too.

Seeing how Freedom Planet is on steam i can't help to wonder why in gods name haven't they remastered Astal on consoles/PC yet... it had really smooth animations and art assets. good story and soundtrack too. shame.

From the looks of it, it looks like a pretty successful fan project. the characters also look like they could be from a sonic game no doubt.

but anyways, i found this old issue of the never released "Sonic Extreme." which was boasting of a high resolution 3D model of sonic in the game.

Sonic extreme 1996

all i could remember when i was around 9 years old at the time, was wishing for something like this to happen. it never happened but you can see how the developers hit the nail on the head for the 3D models in Sonic generations. it even looks better than the old Sonic Extreme render in my opinion.

after i played a little bit of sonic unleashed and even more with sonic generations, i felt my quest was over. from all of the magazines that i held onto for years. i feel we hit that age with these titles.

A better champagne mode would be appreciated but it feels like big accomplishments have been made so far. if you look at the long history of games before.
