I find the visuals very disappointing but fighting games haven't been visually stimulating for at least ten years so it's nothing new. I vividly remember being blown away by Soul Calibur and DOA2 on the Dreamcast running on a VGA monitor. Those were the days

I certainly expected fighting games to set bar in visuals

We've come a long way from DOA2 and Soul Calibur 1. I wouldn't want to go back.

Of course.. if you were just into beating on your scrubby friends it was probably heaven :P

I think part of the problem is that they aren't working with their own in-house made engine anymore, especially tailored for fighting games. Tekken 7 utilised Unreal Engine 4 as well and looks like shit. And honestly most games based on UE4 so far actually do. However, I'm not saying it has to be the engines fault but it's still part of the problem.
Therefore I don't expect Soulcalibur V to take the reasonable leap it should either.
The previous game was one of the finest looking games visually of it's generation, a fact that makes the all-too-small gap even more obvious.

i never would have thought netherrealms would be dishing out visuals that bettered the likes of SF/soul calibur/tekken and DOA, but here we are. injustice shits all over this visually.

Doesn't Injustice 2 do funky stuff like 30 fps supers just to push the visuals? It's really not that surprising.

I think that's extreme hyperbole though.

And funnily enough, the game also runs on a modified version of Unreal engine 3. Its truly bizarre.
I remember well into the PS2's life, launch game Tekken Tag Tournament STILL looked great with Tekken 4 taking it to a whole new level with its large traversal style stage levels. Tekken 5 was okay by comparison.
Then next gen when Tekken 6 went multiplatform, it bizarrely looked worse than Tekken 4 in areas, like the water on stages looking atrocious compared to Tekken 4's jungle stage.

I just don't get why fighting games stopped becoming great benchmarks for graphics over a decade ago. Its only 2 characters on a screen most the time and a fixed background.

@kellemann You want to know why UFC 2 looks pretty good? Because its NOT made on Frostbite. If it was, it would look exactly like every other human character model from every other EA game this gen lol. They actually tailor that engine to do what they want to do in a fighting game, not be forced to use techniques and technologies that don't fit the genre, like most Frostbite engine games have to.

Looks pretty good to me. Tho I will need to see Taki and Ivy to know for sure.

The good news is, the latest release of Unreal Engine 4 added some pretty nice lighting features. Still lots of time for stuff like that to be implemented.

The only thing that really jumps out at me here are some of the textures look low resolution, but that's also likely to change, as well as depend on which platform you are playing on.

I'd like to see a modern version of Tobal No. 1 with some AI/physics based animations and gameplay. What ever happened to the 'Euphoria' engine?

One thing I never really understood is why fighting games aren't better looking as a whole. I mean, they used to be really impressive. Benchmarks for consoles in fact. Tekken on the original PSX, and VF3 for arcades and Dreamcast, until Soul Calibur showed up. Tekken Tag for PS2 etc. They all showcased a consoles power. It would make logistical sense for a fighting game to push more polys into the character models, seeing that there is literally just a background and two detailed fighters on screen at any given time, yet for some reason I look at the model detail in modern gen fighters and they always look underwhelming for some reason. There are open world games that have better models with high res subtools, cloth physics, etc.

Yes, fighting game graphics have disappointed big time after the PS2 era. Like someone said, they used to set benchmarks. They did similar to how racing games do nowadays. The original soul calibur looked amazing on arcade and on dreamcast. Same for others like DOA.

Aye, many J-developers have been slow to switch to unified engines, and it looks like Unreal won for Namco, so we'll see many improvements over the next few years as they dig into it.
