My mom works for Sony, and she brought home a copy of lair last night.
I quickly slipped it into my trusty PS3, and started playing.
So far I am about half-way through.
LET ME TELL YOU 1 THING:
The reviewers are totally wrong.
I mastered the controls after doing the 5 minute Tutorial.
After that, it was amazing.
Graphics: Amazing
Storyline: Great
Everything is great!
Ask me questions, because I will be on this topic all day.

General-Kinobi said a great thing that I totally agree with:
"basically, f*** reviewers. they'd rather play the same old boring fps / halo / copycat game then try to learn something new. As with anything new, its gonna take some time to get used to the sixaxis motion. but how could riding on a dragon, flying around battlefields that make peter jackson hard, dishing out fire and ice, not be as cool as it sounds? All Questions I have answered put together, Including the ones from the GameFaq topic I made for this:
1: What dragons have you unlocked?
Well, for every mission you earn medals. Since I am just trying to beat the game, I am not getting the best medals yet. I think Gold Medals are required to unlock other dragons.

2: Is the game really only 6-8 Hours?
I bet if you were an uber pro and you could beat each mission on your first try, and get a gold medal on each one on the first try, it would be possible to beat in 6-8 hours.
But, for normal people like you and me, It would probably take 12-16 hours just to finish the storyline, and then you have to get all the gold medals, which may take a long time.

3: How would you rate the game? Pro's, cons?
I would rate it a 8.5-9.0

The Pros:

The Motion sensor movement is great. It brings a new aspect to the game, and I feel like its more interactive. Sometimes I just to loop-de-loops just for fun, because it's so entertaining to fly around.

The battles are great, and you basically get to pwn the little soldiers, and you destroy ships and enemy Dragons. Also, they have special goals like "Take Bombs from the Carrier monsters and blow up the city (thats real, and its really fun)."
The different things you can do in the battles is good too. You can Land on the ground and charge into enemies.
You can take the skies and Incinerate catapults and ships from afar.
And you can Get close and personal in Scratching battles against other dragons, which includes different Button Key Combos that create strong attacks and kill the enemy Dragons.

Also, the graphics... oooo the graphics. My TV is old, so It doesn't have HDMI... but the graphics are still amazing. In battle and in Cutscenes, I feel like I'm really there.

There are more to tell and I will continue updating this post.

Cons:

It's pretty difficult. I was stuck on a level that is really hard, which includes having to dodge spotlights, which if see you, you would be shot on sight, and it's not all easy to dodge the lights. Then you have to single handedly take out at least 50 dragons. Frustrating to have to do that over and over and still lose.
Also, one thing about battles is the Lock On System. When i lock on to something, and I kill it, my camera suddenly spins to the way my controller is facing. Annoying, and I lose my sense of direction.

4: Have you fought any bosses yet?
I defeated a Sea Boss.
It was really great. Basically, you have to dodge his attacks with the mosion sensor, then you counterattack at the exact right time with the analog sticks and the D-pad/face keys. Was challenging and fun.

5: So have you run into the "repetitiveness" that everyone complains about?
It is slightly Repetitive... but not in a way that makes it boring.
I find it interesting because every battle has a different feel to it, and different things to accomplish.

6: When you're battling on ground as the dragon, do you have to use the Six-axis? Or can you set it to analog sticks? I have no problem with using Six-axis while flying, but on ground swording troops, I'd rather use the sticks.
Actually, When you land on the ground, you dont actually dismount. You just whack troops with your tail and flame em up with your fire, and you can like charge into them and it has Slo-Mo when you do something cool. And to answer your question, That doesn't include SixAxis, it's just the D-pad and the face buttons.

7: Is there some kind of multiplayer in Lair?
Sadly, no. But the producers said that if there is a sequel, there most likely will be.

8: hey dude, can I come over?
No. What can I say? I'm selfish! I want it allll to myself!

Sath any chance of truncating that quote and linking to the rest of it, it's pretty long!

I'm not sure the Playstation boards are the most objective of sources but the guy's clearly played the thing I'll give him that.

EGM is the only review source you need? Paragraph reviews with arbitrary scores attached for the win? I mean.. it's been getting pretty low marks all around, but that's a pretty piss poor source to go to for critical writing. And how many system sellers would you expect the PS3 to have in its first year anyway?

It took the 360 an entire year to get to Gears of War.. at least there's Warhawk, I guess.. which is getting pretty high marks since that's all that seems to matter. Granted, I'm not trying to argue that the 360's first year wasn't better, we also had stuff like PGR3 in the launch window.. but it wasn't all that.

Lair and HS scream rental to me. My next PS3 game is going to be Warhawk it looks like. More replayability than those games regardless. There's still Uncharted and GT (maybe) too.

First of all it means I like great games that is in my opinion, I didn't ask for anyone to review my games, and if you know my history here on Gamersyde you should know I dont care about reviews. My motto is "think with your gut and your wallet".

If you think HS, Lair and Dark Sector is average then its you, you don't have to be "all that" about it.
So if I buy Halo 3 and say "omg, best fucking game this year is Halo 3" then you would be okay huh? Like I HATE to be like others and get into hyped up games. I only buy the games I want, so basically you can say Lair sucks, but it wont do anything to me, because "I" like how it is.

About the "oh my mom works for" quote...If you can seriously see how the images are taken...its like shit and shaky, so obviously someone has it. He took those images himself just to proof, and if you want more proof, then you are just being silly.
Atleast this guy took images to proof that he got it, not like other people that goes on on bragging about it with no proof at all.

no man EMG isnt the only source that i need, what i meant was...all i need to know is that its been getting low scores all round, dont get me wrong i just see some hypocrisy from some posters, like when the ign/edge reviews of HS came out and 6/7's and sath was like " i dont care about reviews anyways" and then some one who posts a blog about him (not sath) getting the game from his mom who happens to work for sony...and he (sath) is drooling at the mouth !!!!!
i would go so far to say that i would believe EMG over some dude over excitedly pontificating he got free from his mom. ;)

sure lair , HS, and killzone sure look good, but the last two are done by developers with dubious track records "shellshock nam" anyone ???? and i dont believe that sony throwing a load of money at the development team will make a good game if the developer has no tallent

if people continue to buy average games, developers will continue to make average games ..then we get in to the EA territory where they just keep knocking out fifa's , maddens, and tiger woods and need for speeds year upon year upon year (ad infinitum)
i work hard for my money...and i sure as hell aint gonna hand over my cash for a game that hasnt recieved at least an 8/9 in gameplay especially when games are 40 quid a pop(we are not all lucky enough to have our moms work for sony or MS ..lol ;) )

no matter how excited i am for the likes of halo 3...i will still wait for reviews and if that got a 7 ...wouldnt touch it with a barge pole
if one site/magazine gave it a 7 and all the others were like 9's and 10's the sure that 7 would be a blip...or the reviewer has totally no idea and should look for a employment change :) ...just like the bioshock and edge, every one and his mother are screamng 9's 10's GOTY's and edge give it an 8 and its like errrr did he play the game !

but hey each to their own, and its your money dude :)

Carb don't think about it, its all cool, atleast you didn't sound as a immature person or a fanboy, and for that I show respect. :)

I have kept reading forums and such were people keep saying I am gonna buy this game no matter what the review say and I say its a wise choice, because opinion to opinion is very different and THAT is why it makes every person a individual in terms of everything.

Like I didn't went for the hype for the PS3 was getting neither did I for 360, I just went for the games.

I rather hype the game up for myself by watching tons and tons of trailers, interviews, gameplay footage, study my ass off for that certain game to know enough about to decide if this or that game is something for me.

Like for example here in the forums people know me as a Dark Sector fanboy :P
But I am sure that the game will score around 7-8 maybe 6 at some lousy site or something, but that is me being honest.

But once I play it it all depends on what I think because I am the one giving out the money.

For example I anticipated for Gears of War since they announced it and all and I got dissapointed a bit because of the fact that Cliffy kept hyping it up when he said "you want to get back in the game and press that same button for your needs" and I basically didn't.

I thought Gears of War was a very cool game AT ITS PRIME, but now with other games coming out sure it is still cool and then great for the fans but for me, I will be focusing on the games I REALLY bought my consoles for.

For 360 it all starts at November and for PS3 it starts with next month with Heavenly Sword being one of them.

But the thing is that EA is known for its sport games though so every year there is gonna be new sport game coming out no matter how badly a hardcore non-sport fan thinks about EA, they know that there hare millions out there that loves sport games and they keep making them.

In sport games they cant change much except for some twitches of gameplay, prettier graphics and new roster for players, thats about it really.

But other famous genres such as shooters, adventure, racing games and such those are the ones that needs to get better everytime, if not then they will get old and keep getting compared to other genres.

But yeah I hate these kind of talks because I write waaay too much and have the feeling that nobody wants to read a wall of text.

It took the 360 an entire year to get to Gears of War.. at least there's Warhawk, I guess.. which is getting pretty high marks since that's all that seems to matter. Wrong! Warhawk is not an AAA title, just as people wouldnt give Oblivion or Graw AAA status even though they faired good in the reviews and are great sellers. I bet Warhawk wont compare to those title's sales.

It's not as bad as 4.9 and it's not as good as 8/9, in my humble opinion :)

IGN were probably drunk.

+ Flying the dragon and flying controls are great
+ Soundtrack is great
+ Sense of scale is great

- Death by in-game cutaway every 5 seconds
- Targeting, fighting other dragons and associated controls are clunky
- Poorly paced and ill-thought out objectives in missions
- End result is that you can feel periphery to the massive battle going on when you're supposed to be feeling part of it.

I hadn't mentioned any impressions of it up till now as I played this in July and I thought they'd have time to tweak at least the controls, difficulty and missions for the better.

I am keep hearing very different story about Lair from people who either have it or played it in some events.

I guess this is a love or hate game really.
I actually pre-ordered mine yesterday so when it arrives I will buy it, and if the controls was clunky and all I will return it, because the motion sensor is one of the main featurs here, atleast for me.

i work hard for my money...and i sure as hell aint gonna hand over my cash for a game that hasnt recieved at least an 8/9 in gameplay especially when games are 40 quid a pop(we are not all lucky enough to have our moms work for sony or MS ..lol ;) )

no matter how excited i am for the likes of halo 3...i will still wait for reviews and if that got a 7 ...wouldnt touch it with a barge pole
if one site/magazine gave it a 7 and all the others were like 9's and 10's the sure that 7 would be a blip...or the reviewer has totally no idea and should look for a employment change :) ...just like the bioshock and edge, every one and his mother are screamng 9's 10's GOTY's and edge give it an 8 and its like errrr did he play the game !

but hey each to their own, and its your money dude :)

Though they aren't the only dev to be doing it by a long chalk, it's always been a constant thread of theirs when talking about this game. No doubt it'll come back to bite them on the ass if they don't walk the walk.

Some things were fixable but if they're in reviews now, I don't imagine they've been fixed. Other things would have required significantly more effort to re-work and hence I expect will be in the final game.

That said, flawed though it may be. If you like the look of the game and dig the art sound and sense of scale, I would say it's worth playing through. Actually flying the dragons with six-axis works nicely, it's when you try to do more stuff it gets difficult and part of that is sadly down to the control scheme.

It's the sort of game you might play for a few hours, show it off to your friends but after that there's not much to come back to.
