Most english voice actors sound like they just wanna get it over with and collect the paycheck.

A japanese voice actor literally puts their heart and soul into a character as if they're entire life revolves around it sometimes and I respect that.
thats so true, narutosounds like naruto, kakashi sounds like kakshi... you get the picture.
even though i don't understand the japanese , they still manage to really draw me into the stiry.

i think it boils down to the fact that you can pickup bad english voice acting, and not really bad japanese voice acting. that and the fact that it tends to sound more lively over english dubs.
Yea.. you're dead on there. And generally speaking the native language of the original cast is almost always better.. usually. Dubs can be fantastic if they're handled well.. a less literal translation is actually a good deal more natural. Still.. they're few and far between.

He's not dead on actually, the fact is that anime is huge in Japan, probably one of the biggest things on TV, so the caliber of voice acting in Japan is higher than say America, where TV and film is more common.

I.. disagree. There are loads of good English voice actors out there. Anything is going to sound better in its native language unless the people responsible for the localization put a massive amount of effort into it. Look at a translation job like Spirited Away.. you really can't fault that dub.

But what I agree with is: bad acting is a hell of a lot harder to recognize in a language you don't understand.. and so is good acting. Emotion can be fairly subtle at times.. I'm not saying it doesn't come through at all.. but not as clearly.

Here is a fact: High budget animation studios in the USA (mostly for features, but there are good voice actors on television too) use fantastic voice talent. Disney, Warner, Dreamworks, even Fox (when they were still in the game), etc.. sigh.. Warner needs to get back into 2D features :(

Oh, and live action TV and film are pretty damn huge in Japan too. I have a massive amount of respect for eastern animation.. but I'd never suggest that it's all on equal footing.

I'd never accept those statements as any sort of fact unless they came from an individual who could speak and read fluent English and Japanese, and was exposed to a MASSIVE amount of media from both regions. Otherwise it's just a generalization.

Basically.. I doubt any of us know what we're talking about.

Seriously, look at the cast of any Justice League episode. You have a bunch of great character actors spread all over the place.

The things is most dubs are done outside of LA where all the big voice actors actually are. They in general are done on the cheap. Heck most videogames seem to have big voice acting budgets than anime dubs (see Mass Effect).

the Japanese voice actors for Naruto are excellent though, you can tell they know their characters well, and this comes across in their voices. example, compare the same episode in engish and japanese, say episode 19 and you'll see what i mean. i can't wait to see how badly the american voice actors slaughter episode 101
