Chaos on Deponia, the second installment in the Deponia-saga will hit PS4 and Xbox One on December 6. The story is "self-contained" letting new players enjoy the adventure without knowledge of the first game.
Game2k, actually each episode's story is not self-contained, Deponia relies heavily on past games' stories. You can get the gist of most things, but a lot of things will fly over your head if you never played the previous games.
Honestly, the original trilogy was ended so long ago - 2013, that Daedalic Entertainment should have bundled all 3 games together, perhaps even bundling te 4th one as well. They could also offer a discount for those who bought the original game.
I highly recommend the Deponia games to anyone who loves Story-focused, Point-n-Click, or both types of games. To anyone who really loved Monkey Island, Deponia is essential imho - it's kind of like a spiritual successor in a way.

Don't worry, I wasn't criticizing you or anything like that. I was just saying it in case you or anyone else decides to play the game. It's worth playing through them, but one should do it in order, to not feel confused.
Also, that press release is deceitful, so it's not your fault. It's been years since I played each, I played each at launch, but I believe 2 of them even end in cliffhanger. I remember painfully waiting for Goodbye Deponia, the third game, in order to continue the story.
Many characters from the first game, that didn't appear in the second game, also return in the third game - a la Batman: The Dark Knight Rises. These games are very funny as well, if HBO ever accepted to make a Silicon Valley game, I wish the Deponia writers would co-author it with Mike Judge.
